I knew the volcanic ashes had preserved Pompeii, but I didn’t realize just how well. I couldn’t believe how well-preserved everything looked! The Roman Forum and the Temple of Apollo were so clean and clear - in fact, most buildings were. We even saw plaster casts of bodies! It literally felt like we were in Ancient Rome.
Our guide Isabella was a human encyclopedia. She explained everything about how Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD and answered all our questions about life in Pompeii. You could ask her about any random building or column, and she’d teach you its history. The tour wouldn’t have been the same without her!

Do you think the people of Pompeii knew they lived near an active volcano?
Well, no. The inhabitants of Pompeii didn’t know they were living next to an active volcano. It had been dormant for years - its last eruption before the catastrophic 79 AD incident was in 217 BC. With almost 300 years between the two eruptions, there’s no way the people of Pompeii could have known Mt. Vesuvius was a volcano.

FUN FACT
The vibrant "Pompeian Red" seen on the ancient frescoes is famous worldwide. A 2011 scientific analysis revealed that many of these iconic walls were originally painted yellow by the ancient Romans. When Mount Vesuvius erupted, the extreme heat from volcanic gases and ash literally baked the yellow ochre pigment. This intense heat permanently changed the paint's chemical structure, transforming the bright yellow walls into the deep red ruins we see today.
