I feel like we traveled through time to Ancient Rome

I knew the volcanic ashes had preserved Pompeii, but I didn’t realize just how well. I couldn’t believe how well-preserved everything looked! The Roman Forum and the Temple of Apollo were so clean and clear - in fact, most buildings were. We even saw plaster casts of bodies! It literally felt like we were in Ancient Rome.

Hanna
We learned so much from the Pompeii and Vesuvius Tour guide

Our guide Isabella was a human encyclopedia. She explained everything about how Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD and answered all our questions about life in Pompeii. You could ask her about any random building or column, and she’d teach you its history. The tour wouldn’t have been the same without her!

DESCRIPTION

Pompeii and Vesuvius Tour

DISCOVER THE ONCE-PROSPEROUS CITY OF POMPEII

Arrive at Pompeii and immediately enter the Roman city with skip-the-line tickets. Your guide will lead you through the ruins of Pompeii, pointing out artifacts and buildings from ancient times. You’ll see the sprawling Roman Forum, the thermal baths, the Basilica, the Temple of Apollo, and more. There’ll also be plenty of beautiful artwork, including stunning mosaics and frescoes. This is a city you won’t forget!

CLIMB MT. VESUVIUS

After wandering around the city of Pompeii, you’ll travel up Mt. Vesuvius. We’ll drive your small group up the first 1,000 meters of the volcano, after which it’s just a 30-minute hike to the peak. At the summit, you’re in for a treat: unforgettable, 1200-meter-high views over the entire Bay of Naples. Strike a pose and snap some photos!

LEARN FROM EXPERT GUIDES

As you explore both the ruins of Pompeii and Mt. Vesuvius, knowledgeable guides will teach you the sites’ history. In Pompeii, learn how Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD and how its volcanic ashes preserved the Roman city. While hiking, official alpine guides can recount Mt. Vesuvius’s entire turbulent history as an active volcano and explain the science behind volcanic eruptions.

HEAD BACK FULL OF MEMORIES

We can drive you back to either Naples or Sorrento. As you drive home, settle in, unwind, and reflect on everything you saw today (all the archaeological ruins, beautiful views) and on everything you learned.

PRO TIP

Near the parking areas on Mount Vesuvius, you will find small kiosks selling authentic local goods and souvenirs. Keep an eye out for Lacryma Christi (Tears of Christ), a legendary local wine made from grapes grown exclusively in the fertile, volcanic soil on the slopes of the volcano.

Do you think the people of Pompeii knew they lived near an active volcano?

Well, no. The inhabitants of Pompeii didn’t know they were living next to an active volcano. It had been dormant for years - its last eruption before the catastrophic 79 AD incident was in 217 BC. With almost 300 years between the two eruptions, there’s no way the people of Pompeii could have known Mt. Vesuvius was a volcano.

From Sorrento: Piazza Torquato Tasso, 16, 80067 Sorrento

FUN FACT

The vibrant "Pompeian Red" seen on the ancient frescoes is famous worldwide. A 2011 scientific analysis revealed that many of these iconic walls were originally painted yellow by the ancient Romans. When Mount Vesuvius erupted, the extreme heat from volcanic gases and ash literally baked the yellow ochre pigment. This intense heat permanently changed the paint's chemical structure, transforming the bright yellow walls into the deep red ruins we see today.
