My girlfriend and I went on a day trip to Pompeii from Rome. It was educational and thought-provoking to see an almost intact Roman city. An eyewitness account of the eruption
What makes this famous event intriguing is the fact that we have an eyewitness, Pliny the Younger. He was a Roman aristocrat, a lawyer, administrator, and writer, and he left the most important written evidence of the volcanic eruption that destroyed Pompeii and thousands of its citizens. These were two letters that he sent to his friend Tacitus, the famous Roman historian. Pliny describes the event in detail: the earthquakes, the smoke rising from Mount Vesuvius, and everything that preceded the eruption. If you're wondering why more people didn't escape, the answer is that they were accustomed to the frequent earth trembling around Mount Vesuvius.
They did not know that they lived in the midst of an active volcano. The last such event happened thousands of years before, so it wasn't common knowledge. At the time, Pliny the Younger was living in the town of Misenum across the bay from Pompii. He describes his attempt to save his uncle Pliny the Elder, who lived on his estate near Pompeii. They tried to approach Pompeii by sea using a boat but couldn't dock because the sea drew away from the shore as a result of earthquakes. Thick volcanic ash and falling debris also prevented this attempt.
Later, he found out that his uncle did try to escape by sea route but suffocated from toxic smoke on the shore. After returning to Misenum, Pliny and his mother managed to run away by foot and save their lives. He describes the panic-ridden crowds and the chaos that followed. His account is both terrifying and fascinating.
