Skip-the-line access saved us so much time!

The entrance ticket for Pompeii was a huge time-saver. We had no trouble booking our tickets online and could enter the site immediately to avoid long waiting times. The queues were very long on the day we visited, so booking in advance was helpful. We were so excited to see plaster casts. It was so unique to see people as they were in their final moments! You can also see Vesuvius from there. I recommend booking this ticket!

Great visit to Herculaneum

We visited Herculaneum in April and only had a little time, so having priority fast access was a huge bonus. We visited Pompeii last year, so this time, Herculaneum was on our list. It was absolutely worth the visit, the town is smaller, and you can see many details inside the houses. It was incredible to see those skeletons in the boat houses. I'll come back there for sure!

Worth your time & money!

Fantastic archaeological site of Pompeii! I was surprised to see how huge it was. We arrived in the afternoon and walked straight inside. The site has drinking water inside - helpful, as it was quite hot when we visited. Advice: Wear appropriate walking shoes, as there is quite a lot of walking. The highlight was obviously seeing plaster casts! If you are passing through Naples, put it on your travel list.

PRO TIP

Pompeii is huge and has very little shade. Many visitors get so tired walking around that they leave before seeing the best part. Guides even call this “ruin fatigue”. Don’t save the best for last. Go straight to the Villa of the Mysteries (Villa dei Misteri) the moment you arrive. It is located just outside the ancient city walls. The bright red wall paintings inside survived intact and remain some of the most beautiful, well-preserved examples of ancient Roman art.

FAQ - Pompeii Skip-the-Line Tickets

Do I need skip-the-line tickets for Pompeii?

To make the most of your visit to Pompeii, we highly recommend purchasing a skip-the-line ticket. This ticket allows you to avoid the long queues and gain immediate entry, giving you more time to explore the archaeological site.

How long does it take to explore Pompeii?

Plan to spend a whole day there to fully explore Pompeii's main sites, such as the Forum, Amphitheatre, and Villa of the Mysteries. If you're pressed for time, 2 to 3 hours is enough to see the key highlights of this ancient Roman city buried under volcanic ashes.

What should I wear when visiting Pompeii?

The most important thing to remember is to wear comfortable walking shoes. If you visit in summer, we recommend bringing a hat, sunscreen, and water. There are water fountains on the site where you can refill your water bottle.

Is there a security check at Pompeii?

Yes, all visitors must pass through a mandatory security screening before entering the site, even if you have a skip-the-line ticket. Large bags and backpacks are not permitted and must be left at the free cloakroom at the entrance.

Is it better to visit Pompeii or Herculaneum?

Pompeii and Herculaneum have an important part in history and are both worth visiting. Both towns were destroyed by the same Mount Vesuvius eruption in 79 AD and are part of the same UNESCO World Heritage site. When deciding between Herculaneum vs Pompeii, choose Pompeii if you wish to see plaster casts of its inhabitants and a larger area with many attractions. Visit Herculaneum for a smaller, more intimate experience with better-preserved details, visible skeletons, and wealthy homes of ancient Rome's elite.

Can you visit both Pompeii and Herculaneum in one day?

Pompeii and Herculaneum are just a 30-minute train ride apart, making visiting both in one day possible. However, we would not recommend visiting it on the same day, as this can be exhausting and rushed. Instead, consider a separate day to visit each site for a more relaxed and enjoyable experience.

Can I bring food and drink into Pompei?

The archaeological park of Pompeii has a restaurant and cafe, and visitors are welcome to bring snacks and water. Water is also available at the drinking fountains throughout the site.

Can I climb Vesuvius for free?

It is not free to climb the Vesuvius volcano. If you wish to visit Pompeii and the famous Vesuvius volcano, whose eruption buried the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum in 79 AD, you can join our Pompeii and Vesuvius Tour.

PRO TIP

While exploring the heart of the archaeological site, do not miss the House of the Tragic Poet. It is located right on Via delle Terme, directly across from the Forum Baths. The interior of the house is closed to the public to protect the fragile ruins, but don’t let that stop you. Simply walk up and look through the front gate. Perfectly preserved on the floor of the entryway is a famous 1st-century mosaic of a chained black dog with the Latin inscription CAVE CANEM (“Beware of the dog”).
